They watched over kings and saw empires rise and fall over thousands of years, before they were brutally smashed apart with sledgehammers by Isis fanatics

Two huge Assyrian half-lion, half-bird sculptures known as lamassu, dating back thousands of years, were among the treasures destroyed by jihadists in the Iraqi city of Mosul, who declared them works of the devil. But thanks to a project by British and Spanish experts, exact recreations of similar lamassu in the British Museum will stand tall once again in Mosul, liberated from Isis in the summer of 2017
